Spanish tariff policy in 19th-century

Macroeconomic policy, generically understood, simultaneously applies fiscal, monetary, and trade measures. However, sometimes for doctrinal reasons and more often due to current circumstances, one or the other of these measures takes precedence. Historically, trade policy, fiscal policy, and monetary policy (now with the relevant role of central banks) have enjoyed such prominence. Nevertheless, the initiatives implemented by the US administration could once again place trade policy first. In the face of such an eventuality, and as a brief historical reference, this paper presents the controversial role of tariff policy in 19th-century Spain.
